OEM & ODM PEMF Machines: Working With a Leading Chinese Manufacturer

Honkay is one of China's leading manufacturers of PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) therapy equipment. The company has 20 years of research and development experience in professional physical therapy devices and 15 years of volume production behind its current range, produced in a facility that runs up to six production lines with an annual capacity of around 17,000 units.

That factory does two jobs. It builds the PEMF devices sold under the Honkay brand, and it builds PEMF machines for other companies: distributors, clinic chains, equipment dealers and online brands that need a device carrying their own name.

This article explains how OEM and ODM manufacturing works for PEMF therapy equipment — what can be changed, what has to stay fixed, which parts of the process only a manufacturer can control, and how to match a device to the market you sell into.

OEM, ODM and private label: what each term actually means

The three terms are used loosely in B2B conversations, but they describe very different amounts of product development. Most PEMF projects sit somewhere on this scale.

Model Who defines the product What the manufacturer supplies Typical PEMF example
OEM — original equipment manufacturing The buyer, against a defined specification An approved device platform plus your branding and packaging Your logo on the machine body and start screen, your carton and manual
ODM — original design manufacturing Buyer and manufacturer together An existing engineering platform reconfigured to a new specification A different applicator set, mat size, case colour or control layout built on an existing PEMF chassis
Private label The buyer's brand only A catalogue device sold exclusively under your brand A standard PEMF unit shipped as your own model

If your requirement is a logo and a carton, you need OEM. If you need a configuration that does not exist in any catalogue — a different mat size, an unusual applicator combination, a modified control panel — that is an ODM project. ODM work has to be run with the manufacturer that owns the platform, not with a trading company that resells it.

What a PEMF manufacturer controls that a trading company does not

Most of what decides whether a PEMF device performs reliably is fixed before assembly begins, not after. That is why the factory behind the machine matters more than the catalogue the machine appears in.

  • The driver and coil design — the magnetic field an applicator produces is a function of the coil winding and the driver board, not the enclosure around them.
  • The applicator set — loops, butterfly loops, mats and pads are separate tooled items. A trading company can only resell whichever applicators its supplier already offers.
  • The control board and firmware — frequency, intensity and session parameters are set here. This is also the layer a branded interface is built on.
  • The enclosure and case — a moulded wheeled case is a tooling investment. It is the reason case colour and case printing are available on some platforms and impossible on others.
  • Cooling and duty cycle — longer sessions depend on the air-cooling design, which is an engineering decision taken at design stage.
  • Testing and the certification file — aging tests, final quality control and the CE and RoHS documentation that a distributor in a regulated market will be asked to produce.

Honkay's manufacturing base

These are the numbers that decide whether a private-label order can be delivered on schedule and repeated at volume.

Factor Honkay
R&D experience 20 years in professional physical therapy equipment
Volume manufacturing 15 years of production
Production lines Up to six
Annual capacity Approximately 17,000 units
In-house scope Assembly, air-cooling build, aging test and final quality control before packing
Certification CE and RoHS documentation; ISO certification listed for the portable PEMF range
Partner support Free operator training, 24/7 technical support and an extended warranty programme

Capacity matters for a reason that is easy to miss at quotation stage: an OEM order is not one shipment. It is a first order, a repeat order and eventually a model that has to be reproduced identically two years later. That only works when the applicators, the driver board and the case tooling stay under the same roof.

Where most OEM and ODM projects start

Most private-label PEMF projects begin with one of two machine architectures, depending on whether the end user is a professional operator or a household.

Branding an OEM order: what can carry your name

Branding is the part of an OEM brief most often under-specified, because "custom logo" can mean three different things. On Honkay PEMF devices there are separate branding surfaces, and each one is scoped separately in the quotation.

Customisation Standard configuration OEM / private label option
Logo on the machine body Honkay Your logo printed on the case and driver housing
Logo on the start screen Honkay interface Your logo on the touchscreen start screen
Case colour Black Yellow, black, blue, green, pink, or a specified colour
Case and faceplate printing Standard safety and parameter labels Branded labels and market-specific text
Operating voltage 110V / 220V Voltage variant matched to your market
Applicator and accessory mix Large Loop and Butterfly Loop included Configurable across loops, pads, mats and cushions
Packaging and manual Neutral carton, English manual Branded carton and manual in your target language

Logo design is handled in-house and is provided at no additional cost: you send the brand idea or the artwork, the design team prepares the treatment for the machine body and the touchscreen, and you approve it before production. The same approach applies to case colour, where a small number of standard colours can be selected rather than tooled from scratch.

Matching a device to the market you sell into

Once the branding and the commercial terms are settled, the remaining decision is which platform the order is built on. The three devices below cover the three most common end markets, and all three can be produced as OEM or private-label configurations.

How an OEM or ODM project runs, step by step

The sequence below is the same whether the order is a single private-label container or a joint development project. Lead time and minimum order quantity are confirmed per project, because both depend on the platform, the branding scope and the accessory configuration.

  1. Requirement and target market. You describe the end user, the market and the claims you want to make. We map that onto a platform and confirm which parts of the specification are fixed and which are open.
  2. Quotation and configuration. The quotation separates the machine, the accessory set, the branding scope and the packaging, so you can see what each addition costs rather than working from a single blended price.
  3. Branding and artwork. Logo treatment for the machine body and the start screen, case colour selection, label and manual text. Logo design is provided at no additional cost.
  4. Sample and validation. A sample is produced for approval before the production run. This is the stage where applicator choice, parameters and packaging are locked.
  5. Production and testing. Assembly, air-cooling build, aging test and final quality control. Units are checked before packing, not after shipping.
  6. Documentation and dispatch. CE and RoHS documentation, manual and carton, then shipment terms agreed with your freight forwarder.

Documentation, compliance and market access

For a distributor, the paperwork is as important as the machine, because it decides whether the product can be listed at all. Two frameworks come up in almost every OEM conversation.

  • CE marking — for electrical and electronic equipment sold in the European Economic Area, the manufacturer declares that the product meets the applicable legal requirements. A CE mark is not an approval by an EU authority, and it does not indicate origin.
  • RoHS — restricts the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment, and applies to components with an electrical or electronic function unless specifically excluded.

Honkay PEMF devices are supplied with CE and RoHS documentation, and the portable PEMF range is listed with ISO certification on the product pages. Where your market adds its own requirements — import labelling, language rules or additional declaration — raise it during the requirement stage, because retrofitting documentation after production is far more expensive than building it into the run.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between OEM and ODM in PEMF equipment manufacturing?

OEM means the product definition already exists and the manufacturer applies your branding, packaging and documentation to it. ODM means the product definition itself changes: a different applicator set, mat size, case colour, control layout or firmware behaviour, built on the manufacturer's existing platform. OEM is faster and cheaper; ODM is what you need when no catalogue device matches the market you are targeting.

Does Honkay manufacture PEMF machines for other brands?

Yes. Alongside the devices sold under the Honkay brand, the facility produces PEMF equipment for distributors, clinic chains and dealers, including private-label configurations where the machine carries the partner's own logo on the body and on the start screen.

Can the machine case and the touchscreen carry my own logo?

Both surfaces are available. The logo can be printed on the case and driver housing, and applied to the start screen of the touchscreen interface. Logo design itself is provided at no additional cost, and artwork is approved by you before production runs.

Can you build a configuration that is not in your catalogue?

That is an ODM project. A different mat size, an unusual applicator combination or a modified control layout can be built on the existing PEMF platform, provided the change is agreed at the requirement stage. Changes to the platform that require new tooling are also possible, but they change the commercial terms and the development timeline.

What voltage variants are available?

The portable PEMF platforms are available in 110V and 220V variants. The correct variant is confirmed against your destination market before production, because it affects the internal power components rather than only the plug.

What production capacity can a repeat order rely on?

Honkay runs up to six production lines with an annual capacity of approximately 17,000 units, in a facility with 20 years of research and development experience and 15 years of volume production. Repeat orders are produced from the same in-house tooling, which is what keeps a model identical across production runs.

Do the devices come with certification and documentation?

Honkay PEMF devices are supplied with CE and RoHS documentation, and the portable PEMF range is listed with ISO certification on the product pages. Manuals, carton artwork and market-specific labels are part of the OEM scope and are specified before production rather than after.

Is a PEMF device a medical treatment?

No. PEMF devices are used in wellness and recovery settings. They are not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a qualified healthcare professional, and any health concern should be discussed with one.
