Portable PEMF Therapy Machine: Complete Buying Guide
Short answer: a portable PEMF therapy machine is a pulsed electromagnetic field device built into a carry case so it can travel — between rooms, between sites, or between clients. The compact single-control class sits around 34 × 27 × 16 cm at roughly 4.6–5.5 kg; the largest portable class is a wheeled dual-channel case that drives two applicators at once. The two decisions that matter most are how the machine travels and how many applicators it can run simultaneously. Frequency, intensity and applicator geometry decide what you can actually treat — the badge on the case does not.
This guide covers what a portable PEMF device is and how it works, the three case classes and who each one suits, why the applicator set matters more than the marketing, how a session is run in practice, what to check before you buy, and how private-label branding works if you intend to sell under your own name.
What a portable PEMF therapy machine actually does
PEMF stands for pulsed electromagnetic field. A driver board sends a controlled current through an inductive coil — the loop, mat or pad you place against the body — and that coil produces a pulsed magnetic field that passes through skin and soft tissue rather than being absorbed at the surface. Because the field is delivered by a coil rather than by electrodes or probes, the treatment is entirely non-invasive: no needles, no medication, and no contact with broken skin.
The "portable" part is just as important as the PEMF part, because it changes who can use the machine and where. A portable unit packs the driver, the controls and its applicators into one hard case with a moulded handle or a retractable trolley handle, so a therapist can carry it into a client's home, a trainer can keep it in a gym bag, and a small clinic can move one machine between treatment rooms instead of buying one per room.
What a portable machine does not change is the geometry problem at the centre of PEMF. Whatever the case looks like, the coil has to sit against the area you are treating, and a loop that is the wrong size for that area wastes most of its field. That single constraint explains most of the difference between two machines at the same price.
What "portable" means in practice — the three case classes
Suppliers use "portable" to describe anything with a handle, which makes the word almost useless on its own. In practice, portable PEMF machines fall into three classes, and the difference between them is not cosmetic.
| Class | Case and weight | Control | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact carry case | Around 34 × 27 × 16 cm, roughly 4.6–5.5 kg | Single | One person at home or in an office; a practitioner who travels light |
| Wheeled high-power case | Larger hard case on swivel wheels | Single | Higher output for one area at a time; a fixed position in a clinic |
| Wheeled dual-control case | Wheeled case with a retractable trolley handle | Dual channel | Two areas or two people at the same time; a busy room |
The trade-off is straightforward. Every step up in output and channel count adds weight and case volume, and weight is what decides whether a machine actually leaves the cupboard. If a machine is going to be carried up stairs or loaded into a car several times a day, the compact class wins on weight alone — no feature list compensates for a machine that is too heavy to take to the client.
Most manufacturers separate their portable range along those same lines: a single-control home or mobile unit, a higher-output single-control unit for concentrated treatment of one area, and a dual-control unit for simultaneous work. Honkay's own range follows that pattern, with a compact single-control case, a wheeled high-power single-control case, and a wheeled dual-control case.

The applicator set decides what you can treat
Two portable machines at the same price can be completely different purchases, because the applicator set determines what proportion of the body you can actually reach. A single large loop over a back is a different tool from a system with a small targeted loop and a flexible coil for limbs.
Applicator geometry is measured, not guessed. On Honkay's platform the standard kit is a 30 cm large loop and a 15 cm butterfly loop, and a long accessory list sits behind them for specific areas and positions.
| Applicator | Size | Standard or optional | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large loop | 30 cm diameter | Standard | Back, waist, hips and large muscle groups |
| Butterfly loop | 15 cm diameter | Standard | Shoulders, neck, elbows, knees and small areas |
| Bat loop | 20 cm diameter | Optional | Flat contact on broad or awkward surfaces |
| X-Wings | 50 cm diameter | Optional | Crossed-coil coverage of a wider region |
| MagFlex | 25 / 33 / 50 cm | Optional | Wrapping curved or irregular areas such as limbs and joints |
| Long loop | 6 metres | Optional | Long sweeps along the spine or whole-body passes |
| Mat loop | 140 × 64 cm | Optional | Lying on a large coil mat for a broad area |
| Square energy pads | 30 × 30 cm | Optional | Pads placed under or against a specific region |
| Dual mat | 150 × 45 cm | Optional | Two coils in one mat for paired areas |
| Chair cushion | 49 × 49 cm | Optional | Seated sessions on the lower back and hips |
The practical rule is to list the areas you actually need to treat first, then buy the machine whose accessory list covers them. Buying a cheaper unit and planning to add a small applicator later only works if the manufacturer genuinely offers that applicator for that platform — which is why the accessory list belongs in the purchase decision, not after it.

Single control or dual control?
Once portability is settled, the next decision is channel count, and it is the one that changes throughput rather than comfort.
A single-control machine runs one applicator at a time. If you want to treat a lower back and then a shoulder, you run those as two separate passes. A dual-control machine runs two applicators simultaneously on two independent channels, so the same two areas are treated at once — or two people are treated at once from a single machine. In a room that sees several clients an afternoon, that is the difference between a queue and no queue; in a two-person household it means both people are not competing for the same slot.
The cost of dual control is weight, case volume and price. If you only ever treat one area on one person, single control is the better buy, and the money is better spent on applicators.

How a session is run in practice
There is no single standardised portable PEMF protocol, and practitioners vary frequency, intensity and duration by person and by goal. What follows is the general shape of a session, not a prescription.
- Settle the person and agree the target area. A relaxed seated or lying position is the usual starting point, because the applicator has to stay in contact with the body for the whole session.
- Choose the applicator for that area. A large loop for the back, hips or a broad muscle group; a butterfly, bat or MagFlex coil for a shoulder, elbow, knee or ankle.
- Place the coil against the body. The coil should sit in contact with the area being treated rather than hanging in the air — air between coil and body wastes field.
- Set frequency and intensity, starting low. Most practitioners begin at a low setting and build up, using the person's own response as the guide rather than a fixed number copied from a product page.
- Watch the person, not the machine. Comfort, warmth and relaxation are the signals most practitioners use to judge whether a setting is acceptable.
- Record what you did. Settings, applicator, duration and response. Without records you cannot tell whether a change came from the session or from something else.
Two cautions belong in every protocol. First, follow the manual that came with your specific device rather than copying a setting you read about, because published protocols and device behaviour differ. Second, PEMF is a comfort and recovery aid — if someone has an undiagnosed or worsening problem, the machine is not a diagnostic tool and a professional assessment comes first.
What PEMF does, and what it does not do
Portable PEMF is a non-invasive, drug-free modality: a pulsed magnetic field is applied through a coil, without needles, medication or contact with broken skin. That is the part of the description that is uncontroversial.
What the machine delivers, and therefore what you should expect from it, is narrower than most product pages suggest. PEMF is used for comfort, relaxation and to support recovery routines and mobility work. It is a supporting modality used alongside other care, not a replacement for a diagnosis, a treatment plan or a training programme. Anyone buying or reselling an animal or human therapy device should also check what may legally be claimed for that device in their own market, because rules on wellness and therapy claims differ by country and the safest route is to have your copy checked for the market you sell into.
None of that makes a portable PEMF machine a bad purchase. It makes it a portable comfort and recovery tool — which is what it is good at being.
What to check before buying a portable PEMF machine
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Transport weight and case type | A compact 4.6–5.5 kg case and a wheeled trolley case are different businesses. Decide which one you are in |
| Applicator set included as standard | Compare what is included, not what is available. A loop-only kit cannot target a small joint properly |
| Number of independent channels | Dual control treats two areas or two people at once, which changes throughput in a busy room |
| Voltage and plug for your market | 110V and 220V variants are not interchangeable. Confirm before the unit ships |
| Control interface | A touchscreen with saved settings is faster for staff treating many people; a simpler panel can be more robust in a damp or dusty room |
| Certification documentation | Certificates, manuals and labelling — the file a distributor or a regulator may ask for |
| Spare applicators and consumables | Coils take real wear. Confirm replacement parts exist before you need them |
| Training and after-sales support | Operator training and technical support matter more in multi-user settings where staff change |
| OEM and private-label options | If you intend to resell under your own brand, branding scope and lead time belong in the first conversation |
Private label and OEM on a portable platform
Portable PEMF machines are a common private-label product, because the case, the interface and the applicator set are all visible places for a brand to live. What is normally customisable is narrower and more specific than "your logo on the box":
- Case and appearance branding — logo placement on the outer case, and case colour options such as black, yellow, blue, military green or pink.
- Screen branding — logo or brand name on the start screen and interface.
- Handle and hardware colours — handle and trim colours matched to the brand palette.
- Applicator configuration — loop diameter and length, and the number of control outputs (a four-control configuration is available on some platforms).
- Packaging, manuals and labelling — the documents a distributor in a regulated market will be asked for.
Two things decide whether a private-label run is straightforward or painful: whether the manufacturer owns the platform (so the same hardware is repeatable across production runs) and whether spares and applicators will still exist in three years. Portable PEMF devices are repairable equipment, not consumables — the coils take the wear and the case takes the knocks. A machine bought from a reseller with no engineering behind it becomes scrap the first time a loop fails.
Frequently asked questions
What is a portable PEMF therapy machine?
A pulsed electromagnetic field device built into a carry case so it can be moved between rooms, sites or clients. A coil applicator is placed against the body, and the driver unit generates a pulsed magnetic field through the coil. The compact single-control class is around 34 × 27 × 16 cm and roughly 4.6–5.5 kg, with larger wheeled cases above that.
How much does a portable PEMF machine weigh?
The compact carry-case class is the lightest, at roughly 4.6–5.5 kg in a case around 34 × 27 × 16 cm. Higher-output and dual-control units move into larger cases and, in most portable ranges, onto wheels with a retractable trolley handle. Weight is the feature that decides whether the machine actually travels, so it belongs near the top of any comparison.
What is the difference between single control and dual control PEMF?
Channel count. A single-control unit runs one applicator at a time, so two areas are treated in two passes. A dual-control unit runs two applicators simultaneously on two independent channels, so it can treat two areas of one person at once, or two people at once from a single machine. Dual control costs more and weighs more; it pays for itself in throughput.
Which applicator do I need most?
It depends entirely on the areas you treat. On the standard kit that means a 30 cm large loop for the back, waist and hips, and a 15 cm butterfly loop for shoulders, neck, elbows and knees. If you need to wrap a limb or an irregular area, you need a flexible coil such as MagFlex or a long loop. List your target areas first, then check that the machine's accessory list covers them.
Do I need a 110V or a 220V machine?
Whichever matches the market the machine will be used in — they are not interchangeable. Confirm the voltage and plug type before the unit ships rather than after, especially if you are buying for a region other than your own or reselling into more than one market.
Can a portable PEMF machine be branded for my own company?
On most portable platforms, yes. Private-label options normally cover case logo placement, case colour, screen branding, handle colours, loop diameter and packaging, manuals and labelling. Read the full process in our guide to OEM and ODM PEMF machine manufacturing.
Is a portable PEMF machine safe for home use?
PEMF is a non-invasive modality: no needles, no medication and no contact with broken skin. The practical risks are about use rather than the device, so follow the manufacturer's manual for the stated conditions of use and contraindications, keep sessions at comfortable settings, and treat the machine as a comfort and recovery aid rather than a substitute for professional assessment.
What does a portable PEMF machine cost?
In this store, portable units currently run from $1,999 for a compact single-control carry-case device and $2,499 for the PEST LOOP magneto therapy unit, to $3,499 for the HKS-29D dual-control machine with a 7-inch touchscreen and a wheeled case. Accessories such as loops and mats are priced separately, so compare the total kit rather than the case price alone.
Honkay manufactures PEMF therapy equipment in China, including a portable range built for home users, therapists, clinics and distributors. Units are available in 110V and 220V variants, and OEM, ODM and private-label options are supported across the range.
